Health and Nutrition
Chester’s Community Grocery Co-op has assumed a very important role in addressing the health needs of the community. The Co-op has engaged its owner-members and non-members in a dialogue on health and quality of life. This engagement was started in early spring with the start of the Farm Fresh Market and the Co-op’s first Wellness Fair. The result has been a creative synergy of two things folks do and should be doing – eating well and fitness. A successful partnership between the Co-op and Crozer Keystone Healthy Systems and Selene Co-op produced a well rounded Wellness Fair that incorporated preparing traditional fare in a healthier manner, yoga for kids and adults, massage therapy, standard health screenings, African dance, food tasting of healthy foods and a visit from professional former Eagles and current Minnesota Vikings football player Thomas Tapeh. We believe that access to affordable and nutritious food is a basic right for every human being. Although there was no physical building the desire to provide access to fresh quality affordable produce was necessary and great. So through the summer members and non-members were able to purchase the freshest produce local and non-local organic and conventional around. To address the health needs more directly the Co-op has formed Chester’s Community Charitable Corporation a non-profit entity that will develop programming and services that will have a concentrated impact on the health concerns of owner-members and non-members alike.
